Congratulations! Reading this subject matter proves you must be pondering over your options, and if you’re considering retraining you’ve already done more than most others. Can you believe that just one in ten of us consider ourselves contented at work - but the majority will do absolutely nothing about it. Why not liberate yourself and move forward - don’t you think you deserve it.

We’d politely request that before you start a course of training, you run through some things with a mentor who can see the bigger picture and can make recommendations. The right person will be able to assess your personal likes and dislikes and give you guidance on the right role for you:

* Do you like to work collaborating with people? Is that as part of a team or with many new people? Possibly operating on your own in isolation would give you pleasure?

* Have you given much thought to which industry you choose to work in? (Post credit crunch, it’s essential to be selective.)

* Is this the final time you imagine you’ll re-train, and based on that, will your chosen career path allow you to do that?

* Do you expect your new knowledge base to give you the opportunity to find new work easily, and stay employable until your retirement plans kick in?

We ask you to find out more about the computer industry - there are a larger number of positions than staff to fill them, and it’s one of the few choices of career where the sector is growing. Despite what some people would have you think, it isn’t just geeks looking at screens every day (though naturally some jobs are like that.) Most positions are occupied by average folk who want to earn a very good living.

With the sheer volume of talk on the area of computing technology these days, how is it possible to recognize what precisely to look for?

A so-called advisor who doesn’t ask you a lot of questions - the likelihood is they’re really a salesperson. If they’re pushing towards a particular product before learning about your history and whether you have any commercial experience, then it’s definitely the case. Often, the training inception point for a student with a little experience is largely dissimilar to someone without. Commencing with a basic PC skills course first may be the ideal way to get up and running on your computer program, but depends on your skill level.

One thing you must always insist on is proper direct-access 24×7 support from expert mentors and instructors. So many companies we come across will only offer a basic 9am till 6pm support period (maybe later on certain days) with very little availability over the weekend. Try and find training with proper support available at any time of the day or night (irrespective of whether it’s the wee hours on Sunday morning!) Ensure you get access directly to professional tutors, and not access to a call-in service which takes messages - so you’re constantly waiting for a call-back - probably during office hours.

World-class organisations offer an internet-based 24×7 system pulling in several support offices throughout multiple time-zones. You will be provided with a simple environment that accesses the most appropriate office irrespective of the time of day: Support when it’s needed. Always pick a company that gives this level of learning support. Only true live 24×7 support provides the necessary backup.

Most trainers typically provide mainly work-books and reference manuals. It’s not a very interesting way to learn and not really conducive to achieving retention. Studies in learning psychology have shown that we remember much more when all our senses are involved, and we get physically involved with the study process.

Interactive full motion video with demonstrations and practice sessions will forever turn you away from traditional book study. And they’re far more fun. Be sure to get a look at some courseware examples from the school that you’re considering. The package should contain demo’s from instructors, slideshows and interactive labs where you get to practice.

Plump for disc based courseware (On CD or DVD) every time. You’re then protected from internet connection failure and issues with signal quality.

If you may be starting with a training company which still provides workshop days as a feature of their programme, then take note of these hassles met by most trainees:

* Lots of round journeys - quite often 100’s of miles or more.

* Asking for time off work - most schools will only provide availability during weekdays and link several days together. This can be hard for a lot of working people, especially when you add the travel time on.

* And don’t ignore the lost holiday days. Most of us have 20 days holiday per year. If over 50 percent is used in classes, then we haven’t got much left for ourselves.

* ‘In-Centre’ workshop days usually are over-subscribed, leaving us with a less-than-ideal slot.

* Class pace - centre-days can consist of trainees of varied aptitude, therefore there is often tension between those that want to go quickly as opposed to those with less experience.

* Let’s not disregard the increased expense of driving or bed and breakfast for the night either. Often, this will cost hundreds and even thousands of pounds extra. Do the maths yourself - you’ll be (unpleasantly) surprised.

* Not wanting employers to know about the training is often very important to many attendees. Why throw away potential advancement, pay-rises or achievement at work because you’re getting trained in a different area. If your work discovers you’ve committed to qualification in another sector, what will they think?

* Every one of us must, at some time, have avoided putting our hand’s up, because we wanted to look smarter?

* There are those of us who occasionally work elsewhere in the country for several days at a time, imagine the trouble involved in getting to the requisite classes, as time is now more scarce than ever.

A more flexible training route is to employ videoed lessons in the comfort of your own home - and do it when it’s convenient to you - not someone else. Imagine… Utilising a notebook PC you can study wherever you want. And live 24 hr-a-day support is only a web-browser click away at times of difficulty. Repeat any modules if you need to - the more times you cover something - the more you’ll remember. And note-taking is gone forever - everything is already laid on for you. The outcome: Less hassle and stress, saved money, and you’ve avoided all travel.

Being a part of progressive developments in new technology is about as exciting as it can get. Your actions are instrumental in defining the world to come. Many people are of the opinion that the technological revolution we’ve been going through is cooling down. Nothing could be further from the truth. Terrific advances are ahead of us, and the internet in particular is going to dominate how we conduct our lives.

If earning a good living is way up on your goal sheet, you will appreciate the fact that the regular income of a typical IT worker is much greater than with other market sectors. With the IT marketplace emerging at an unprecedented rate, it’s likely that demand for well trained and qualified IT technicians will continue to boom for a good while yet.
